Participation and influence in society - Objective Domain 1

Participation and influence in society is a basic prerequisite for public health.

Participation and influence

Societies with low election turn-out, where few people feel there is any point in participating in NGO activity or trying to influence societal development, are those which are characterized by the occurrence of serious health problems. Increasing people’s level of participation in society is therefore one of the most important public health objectives.

The Public Health Bill emphasizes that efforts to strengthen democracy and defend human rights reinforce the feeling of affinity in society as a whole and increase trust between people, two factors which promote good health. Particular weight is placed on strengthening the capacity for social and cultural participation among financially and socially challenged persons. In addition, opportunities to influence and participate in society are supported for children, young people and the elderly.

Labour market policy, media policy, gender equality, integration and disability policies are among the fields that are particularly important to allow citizens the chance to participate in the governing and development of society. Public health efforts within Objective domain 1 are focused on developing indicators and targets that enable prioritisation and follow-up.
