Harmful effects from gambling for money are related, among other aspects, to how much one gambles, the pattern of gambling behaviour, the individual’s socioeconomic situation, gender and age.

There are many similarities between gambling problems and other problems of abuse such as alcohol, tobacco, narcotics and doping. A large part of the more general risk factors are common to both gambling and alcohol.

The questions about gambling in the survey are primarily intended to measure the prevalence of problem gambling. Gambling consumption is usually measured by the stakes (how much money the person bets) and the frequency of the gambling (the number of times the person has gambled in the past 30 days).
