General health
We measure the general state of health with a question about self-assessed general health. This question relies on the classic WHO definition, which includes physical, mental and social well-being.

In a number of studies, the self-reported general state of health has been shown to have a strong association with mortality and the question is of central significance to monitoring the health trend over time.
The question about prolonged illness is of central importance both to being able to identify persons with prolonged illness and as an indicator of the need for care. The question also plays an important role in defining persons with disabilities.
