The Swedish National Institute of Public Health (SNIPH) actively participates in and contributes to international public health work. This is done mainly by being involved in public health work within the EU and other international constellations, by collaborating with the Nordic countries and by taking part in a variety of specialised international public health networks.

Work at EU level
The Swedish National Institute of Public Health is National Focal Point (contact authority) for the EU Public Health Programme which finances European public health work. The Institute is also National Focal Point for a European programme on drug prevention and awareness. As National Focal Point, the SNIPH works
- for Swedish priorities to be met,
- to promote an active Swedish participation in EU funded initiatives.
In addition, the SNIPH is designated National Focal Point for the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) located in Lisbon. In this role, the SNIPH reports national data on drugs and drug addiction to the EMCDDA.
On the EU level, the SNIPH also participates in the EU-funded project “DETERMINE – an EU consortium for action on the socio-economic determinants of health”. The project is a collaboration of over 50 partners from 26 European countries working to address the social determinants of health and to improve health equity.
During Sweden's EU Presidency in autumn 2009, the SNIPH is organizing and participating in conferences in the field of public health. These conferences will focus on three topics: Alcohol, Mental Health and Healthy Ageing.
Public health work globally and within the Nordic region
The Swedish National Institute of Public Health collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO), particularly through specific projects and assignments. In the field of nutrition and physical activity the Institute is designated National Focal Point for a WHO/EURO project designed to monitor the development of nutrition, physical activity and obesity.
Additionally, the SNIPH coordinates and contributes data to the Ministry of Health and Social Affair’s annual reporting to both the EU and WHO concerning alcohol consumption, drinking habits, alcohol injury development and policy development.
In the Nordic arena, the SNIPH participates in the planning and implementation of the Nordic Public Health Conferences held every third year and has regular contact with relevant institutions in other Nordic countries in order to stimulate the exchange of experience and cooperation.
The Institute takes part in and helps to organize various international public health conferences and also receives visitors from abroad who are interested in learning about Swedish public health policy and our work.
