The main purpose of the report is to outline the main health, social and economic effects of alcohol use by the elderly; to discuss recent trends in alcohol consumption and alcohol related harms; and to determine whether current levels of consumption are problematic or warrant further attention.

The ten countries that have been selected for inclusion in the report are: the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
